On 2nd February 2025, at approximately 3:15 PM local time, the island of Madeira experienced a moderate earthquake registering a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale. The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) reported that the epicenter was located approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Funchal, at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

Residents across Madeira felt the tremor, with reports indicating noticeable shaking in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, and Machico. Many individuals evacuated buildings as a precaution, though no significant injuries have been reported. Structural assessments are ongoing, but initial evaluations suggest minimal damage to infrastructure.

This event follows a series of minor seismic activities in the region earlier this year. On January 6, a 1.2 magnitude quake was detected off the southwest coast of Câmara de Lobos, and on January 19, a 2.3 magnitude tremor occurred near the Madeira-Tore platform.

Madeira's geological setting makes it susceptible to seismic activity. The island is situated near the Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault, a tectonic boundary between the African and Eurasian plates. Historical records indicate that while Madeira experiences occasional earthquakes, most are of low magnitude and cause minimal damage.

In response to the recent quake, regional authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols during seismic events. The Civil Protection Service has been activated to monitor the situation and provide assistance if necessary.

Seismologists from IPMA continue to analyze data from the event to better understand the region's seismic activity and assess any potential risks. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and report any structural damages to local authorities.

While Madeira's seismic activity is typically moderate, this event serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and awareness in earthquake-prone regions.
